I've been so consumed with Ravelry that posting everywhere else has come second but I wanted to display me and the DD #2's Walking on the Wild Tide footies from STR Club '07. The original pattern is what my daughter's footies are knitted in. For mine I just used a rib pattern on the top of the foot. I really like this yarn and will definitely be buying some of this for future use. I have to admit that I hadn't been doing so well with the whole short row method but with my daughter's socks I came across http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/2mlsocks_heel.htm
and have felt more confident with the short-row method. I also knit my footies using the Magic Loop method from the toe up. I still have to work on getting my bind-off tension correct but overall I'm happy with both newly aquired techniques.

I have a good beginning on this first of my toe up, on two circular needles sock. The plan is to add Brenda Dayne's Brother Amos pattern to the leg. I am considering casting on for the second sock and getting the other toe done and doing the two together.

Brother Amos is a great pattern and I am making a call out for anyone who would like to join me in a KAL. For the leg part I used K3,P1,K1,P1 rib.
I am not in love with the way the heel is, but maybe its for lack of practice. its my first toe up!
I did two different bind-offs: one is the called for sewn method, and the other- I K2tg and pass the stitch to the left needle, repeat to end. faster...
I LOVE the yarn!! Perfect for socktoberfest!

Then there were two! Not identical, but I think I prefer their individuality. For Mr. Left I used the figure-eight cast on, and for Miss Right I used the Magic Cast-on (much better). I tried another heel--a rounded short-row version--but it again resulted in a too-short sock for my foot. Until something better comes along, flap heels are it.

Now that I have a pair of handmade, hard-won socks, I've realized that I've never really worried about how dirty or potentially snaggy my floors are. I'm going to have to wear slippers with my socks to avoid these perils.

So...I'm very happy to be able to say that I've knitted at least one pair of socks in my life. Thanks to those who started this inspiring blog! My best to all!

Hello everyone! It is not only my first toe-up, it is my FIRST message here :o)
I think it is a great idea with a toe-ups KAL!

My toe-ups number 1 are finished.
I’ve always done the cuff down sort of knit sock and it is certainly a
great learning experience for me. I never thought I'd say that toe up
socks are as nice as top down ;o) I am really loving this new method!

These socks are worked toe up with short row toes and a choice of short
row heels.

I made a leaves stitch chart and if you like it you can download it

I know the edging of cuff in toe-ups will never be as stretchy as
casting on at the cuff that is why I made a rolled cuff edge. I was
afraid about too frilly edge. And I like the edge!

These are my STR in Monsoon colorway knitted toe-up on two pair of cirs These are my DD's STR in Walking on the Wild Tide colorway knitted toe-up using Addi and the Magic Loop method. These were finally completed last night.
I'm probably the last person that knits socks to finally have Addi Turbo needles but I just didn't like the cost. I finally found a company named Kangaroo and purchased 3 Addi Turbo needles for Magic Loop knitting for $28.00 including S&H, yes, that's right.

I've been lurking around looking at everyone's pics and love what you've been doing but have had a horrible time with my Blogger account and have changed my login info over 4 times and my PW double that amount. I was ready to give up but Chuddos go to OzKnitter for her help. Glad to be back in the group.

My first sock ever! I essentially knit it at least twice. Three toe attempts, and two or three rips on the shortrow heel, which was then too small after I finished it. Then a new gusset and flap heel, and two different starts up the cuff. I ripped back twice when I found holes from deeply dropped stitches. I worked the ribbing twice because my ribbing wasn't pulling in like I thought it should... I had to go out and buy 00 dpns. Then I made two attempts on the yarnover (stretchy) bindoff, which I ended up doing with a crochet hook--a valuable technique that was much more comfortable than all that pso'ing.

When I look at these, I am amazed at how my knitpicky perfectionism has mellowed over the years. This sock is full of wandering gauge and sloppy stitch issues. The sock is also too long by 1/2", but I don't care--better than 1/2" too short, which was way uncomfortable. I finished it a couple of months ago now, and I finally got "Right Sock" on the needles just this past week. I did Judy's Magic Cast On this time (LOVE IT!) and I'm planning a little different heel turn. Obviously, I'm not going to bother to try and match the stripes!

In between Mr Left and Mr Right, I was diverted by Nona's Sidewinders socks, which are worked longways, up and down the foot. I made ONE, and I learned a ton, but my guage was a bit floppy. I have used the Turkish Cast on for this , pattern can be found at http://www.sockpixie.com/catalog/item/4635135/4736175.htm This is a very easy pattern to remember looks good with a solid color yarn and with a varigated yarns. I have used the Bernat Hot Sock on skein for each sock .. used up about 99.9% of the yarn they are knee high for my 12 year old daughter

OK! Ive finished the Baudelaire sock and made good progress on the second,also nearly finished another pair of simple toe ups from Wendy Knits as a gift.

This is a Regia brand but I cant remember the name,Stripes? A bit harsh to knit but feel great on,lovely, easy to remember pattern too,Ill make more of this!

The second pair I'm working on are in one of Patonyles multicoloured ones but Ill have to add piccy later as I left them at work! Super soft,I wish they will produce more pretty colours. I have a stash of red that I found on Ebay and it hasn't been produced for some time looking after them as I know I cant get anymore!

the color in the picture is not good. My gd broke my camera and the new one doesn't take good pictures. these are jitterbug yarn on size 3 needles to start and when I got to the increases I went with a size 2. I wanted to make sure the heel with tight enough. They came out great and I love the yarn.

Yesterday I finally finished my first pair of toe up socks. I thought the heel looked odd until my husband tried them on--perfect fit! I did my regular bind off on the first sock, but there were some tightness issues, so for the second sock, I used EZ's sewn bind off--I lurv it! I'm going to re-do the bind off of the first sock.

I promised socks to Neal in 2005, and I cast on for Socktober fest in 2006. I'm so happy to finally be done, and I'll certainly try toe ups again!

It is so amazing to try something new just because it is is different....and you end up loving it! I have been knitting socks for so long but always in the cuff-down style. I rarely use a pattern unless I am doing a lacey one. But toe-up called me--how could you turn the heel? I was intrigued! I stumbled on the short row heel used here, but it finally dawned on me what the goal was and it all came out just fine! The yarn, a superwash, is hand-dyed by JenyaLovesFiber , an EBay store; I spun it on my Ashford Joy wheel, the needles I used were 2.75mm by KnitPicks, the pattern for this was a freebie from Turtlegirl called Red Dwarf Socks.

I finished my first toe up sock. I used a combination of techniques. In fact each part of the sock came from a different pattern. Because it was an experiment, I used an old discontinued yarn from my stash. I enjoyed every part of the process except for the bind-off. It went down-hill at finishing time. Almost finished my first toe-up sock - one of the 'On-Your-Toes' socks from Summer Interweave Knits. The toe didn't look right at first, as I just couldn't get the Eastern Cast-on right. I had to undo them and use a provisional cast on, grafting the toe together afterwards with the Kitchener stitch. I prefer this toe anyway.

I love the rib pattern which fits snugly around your foot. I must admit, it was odd knitting toe-up at first, but I got used to it quite quickly, and just did what the pattern said! I've enjoyed learning new techniques and might try another pair of toe-ups after this one. At least my choice of patterns won't be limited now.

Will finish this sock tonight and it's matching one over the next few days. Will post a picture of the pair then, and let you know what my next attempt will be.

Lace Sock Progress and New Project

Here is my progress on my first toe-up sock from the Knitting Lingerie Style book. It's not perfect - a few errors in the lace do to me forgetting if I'm on the knit row or lace pattern row, but for the most part it's looking good. It's a really easy pattern and I'm enjoying the quick progress. I have about 3 more inches before completing the first sock in the pair. I think that the toe-up sock makes a lot of sense now that I've started to work one. I'm sure the next one will go even faster. Much better than the reverse, I think.

"Pick up and knit 1 st from first half of toe, knit to end, pick up and knit 1 st from first half of toe."

Well I got stuck into the Hubby sock I originally started as in my first post, Im pleased with how it worked out even if I did get the increases at heel upside down....

In a fit of boredom I picked a ball of Patons Bluebell during lunch,that was used to mend a friends jumper(it was hiding in my knitting bag) and started another purely on memory.Ive got to the heel flap(thick ankles so not game yet to try short row heel) and now need the instructions.I think Im about 5 to 10 rows a bit long in the ffot but I didnt want a tight fit anyway.....

Species for both: Wendys Short row toe up for toes and I used the heel flap method from Beudelaires(hope thats spelt right),It took a bit to find a pattern with the right number of sts to coincide with these socks as I didnt want to try working it out myself til I understand the concept of a toe up in its parts... I added a 2x2 cable on either side of top with one st on outside before the bottom sts started!

Now I cant wait to start another even though I havent finished these.....

Jaywalker Disaster

Hi All,

This is my second pair of toe up socks and I'm using the Jaywalker toe up pattern. The yarn that I’m using is the Fortissima Socka Disco Sock Yarn that was given to me by a friend. I love the colours!! Don’t you think it’s very suitable for this pattern?

A few nights ago, I finally finished my 1st Jaywalker sock but guess what. I tried to put it on and uh oh!! I can't pull the heel part of the sock onto my heel!!! It’s too freaking tight!!! The leg section and the cuffs were ok. It’s the freaking heel!!! Why oh why???? After working so hard on the sock, I cant even wear it??

I wasn’t about to give it up. I pulled and I pulled and I pulled. I manage to put the sock on after two minutes of struggling with it. It look so nice!!! But, why is it so hard to wear it? It was also hard to take it off. So, I’ve decided to give it to my friend, who managed to wear it without as much problem as I did. Can those sock experts out there, give me some advise as to how to knit the next sock that will surely fit me?? Please????

Tonight, I used Peggy's Stretchy Bind-off for Toe-Up Socks on my Monkeys and they are done! Behold the beautiful Monkey modeled on my very own Duct Foot.

The little girl reminded me to leave a bit of sock yarn leftover for mending in the future, so I thought about it and devised a way to catalog my sock yarn bits by labeling them including the pattern name I used and storing them in a zipper bag inside a photo box.

The Monkeys have heels now. The pattern calls for gussets and heel flap, but I wanted to try a short row heel. I followed Queen Kahuna's No Wrap, No Gap Short Row Heel directions, but managed to muck up the last stitches which left me with a small hole on one side of each sock. *sigh* I'll just close them up after I'm done by weaving in some scrap yarn. Last night at knit night, Joanna told me that I didn't pick up the wrap stitch on one side of each of my socks. *pout* I was so proud of myself and now this... *oh well* I'm not going to rip out the heel, I'm just going to go forward and try again next time.

So, I've dumped Anastasia and am now courting Monkey. Yes, I'm in L O V E with Cookie A's Monkey sock. I'm feeling good about these socks now as I've completed the first repeat of the lace pattern and I'm past the point of no return as far as ripping out the toe for the 4th time. I gave up on the short row toe and went back to my favorite rounded, tried and true Queen Kahuna Fan Toe. D*mn my OCD, but I gotta have a nice, smooth rounded toe.

I do believe that Cookie is now my sock guru. I'll have to cook up a Cookie mantra now. I mean peep her patterns. They are the SHIZNIT!

I tried on my sock to see how I liked the feel of the 1x1 ribbing. I decided I really didn't like it and it was just too loose. Before I frogged it, I checked my gauge and found it was different than the swatch I had done many moons ago. That probably explains why it's so loose.
So, it's been frogged. Since I had to rewind the ball anyway, I grabbed the scale my husband uses to weigh his R/C model airplanes & divided the Sockatta yarn into 2 equal weight balls. So, when I restart I'll know exactly how much yarn I have for the leg.
I'm sure that's a Duh! realization but it's one that didn't hit me until I was fairly far along.

I wasn't too happy with the cast on in the Gibson-Roberts book I'm using. So, I'm going to give the cast on from the latest Interweave Knits' article on Toe-Up socks.

I joined this knitalong months ago but I never actually started my sock until now. I had some stops and starts. I tried Falling in Love with some Socks that Rock that I received recently but it just wasn't working. Then I tried them in another handpainted sock yarn that I had, but the pattern really wasn't showing up well at all in a handpainted. So now I'm doing Anastasia, which is coming along quite nicely:

Having started three different times I keep improving my short row toe. Now it looks pretty good. I'm not sure I'm a convert to the toe up method yet. Ask me after I've finally finished the first one!

There was a time, not so long ago, that I hated you. I loathed you with the white hot passion of a thousand suns. I hated you with the fervor usually reserved for moths and the current presidential administration.

When I stuffed you in your yarntainer and threw you across the room after two weeks and several thousand attempts to make you work, it was with the intention of never, ever setting my poor blighted eyes upon you again.

I despised you for your complicated process, the twitch in my eye, the hot, seething rage, and my complete and utter inability to wrap my head (har har) around your stupid short rows of which we will speak no more.

However. Now, you are my friend. I love your Easy Toe. Your Easy Toe that made sense to me, even at midnight. I love your simplicity and straightforwardness and how I can now totally see myself using you over and over.

I don't know why, after casting on and ripping and ripping and casting on ad nauseaum that it didn't occur to me to consider your possible majesty. Instead I let myself be led astray by the words of others that those dratted toes that shall not be named were better. I was so very wrong. Their vileness even tainted the needles with which I worked, and thus you got fresh, happy new needles with which to work.

My first pair had a spiral toe (icord cast on). These have a short row toe (provisional cast on). The garter stitch makes it so easy! These are from the Rockin Sock Club from Blue Moon Fiber Arts. I love the yarn--Monsoon.

I started a basic toe-up sock with Sockatta yarn using Priscilla Gibson-Roberts book Simple Socks: Plain and Fancy. I used her cast on & formulas using a swatch I did on US 2 double points. I went from a 2 to a 1.5 to try to make it fit a bit tighter. I like how it's looking.

I tried it on and it feels a tad loose. I remember a podcaster (I wish I remembered which one.) talking about doing her sock foots in rib to make it fit better. So, after the photo, I switched to a 1x1 rib. I’ll see how I like it. I can always rip back and switch to 1s.
This is only my 3rd set of socks so I'm still learning a lot.

Ive been watching all these lovely socks just rolling off the needles and boy I feel slack,other projects including knitting for charity have taken me elsewhere and dont you know it,when I came back to my sock I cant for the life of me remember what patterns I used to start the socks in the first place.
Im at the ankle and want to finish them so will try to match the second sock as closely as possible,will post pictures maybe of a new sock in the near future! Im a sucker for starting something new!!!

Hi Everyone!

This is my first post here and, obviously, my first toe up sock.

I'm knitting up The Boyfriend Sock by Slippedstitch for my significant other. I'm using Knitpicks' Palette in "Pool" and "Fog".

The stripe bands are ten rows tall and the colours seem to compliment each other alright. The yarn is admittedly a little rough and scratchy, but that's peruvian wool for you.

This is also my first time using US 0 needles. I've never used such small needles before but the sock is knitting up quicker than I expected. The pattern and moreover the colour changes give me little goals to work towards so the knitting becomes easier for me.

At this point, I probably would have been able to have this sock almost done if it weren't for life getting in the way. Hopefully joining this group will encourage me to pick up this sock more often though.

I've been a member of the First Toe Ups group since fall, but I've never posted before, as I never had anything to post about before. But right now I am working on my first ever pair of socks, which also happen to be toe-up, so I thought I'd finally make an appearance here.

They are made of hand-dyed KnitPicks Bare (the superwash/nylon version), and are being knit sans pattern, roughly following the Knitty Universal toe-up for now, though I'll be doing an afterthought heel and might do something resembling ribbing from the heel up because row after row of just stockinette is getting boring.

The photo is a few days old, they are at least an inch longer than they were when I took it.

I watched it last night and the pair I'm working on now is coming out much better. I'm also using a different pattern the one from Kitty 2006. I think I like that heel better. I did not want to post until my daughter returned with the camera and the photo of my first pair of toe up.
But I'm on my second pair and the heel still eludes me. On the first pair I use the short row heel and ended up with a lot of holes, so on my second pair I was trying to use the rounded heel. but It just does look right. I love the toe up and would love to all my socks this way but I get to the heel and I am lost. Does anyone know of a video on short row? Please Help

First-Sock Slogging

Here we go... drink it in while it exists in this state. I am about to frog it again. My sock is learnin' me. When I picked up and then dropped the heel wraps, using those itty bitty needles, and had to rip back to redo several rows three times, I finally decided to just let those wrap babies stay un-picked-up. As long as I didn't end up with giant portholes, I was going to be happy.

On the other hand, now that I've gotten this far (plus another 1/2" than the picture shows), I've decided the sock is just too small. It feels okay on the foot for the five minutes I admire it, but after I take it off I feel like I'm still wearing it for half an hour. I'm thinking I need a much deeper heel than I think my pattern is written for. Or, maybe it's something to do with my lovely new Tension Issues. I am seriously considering changing to a flap heel.

These may move forward and back, but I am still enjoying the toe-up sock thing. Once I get a sock that fits me, I'll be good for at least this one whole pair.

I havent done much over the last little while,the usual thing! TOO many things going at once,but i have done abit to these gorgeously soft socks that are destined to Hubby!

Now Ive put a close up of heel turn and am wondering if I have some how reversed the increases down to heel instead of up...

Any comments?

... but I don't care. I tried to start toe ups using a bunch of different methods and just couldn't get it right. So I got out the Queen Kahuna pages I'd printed and did it that way. My cast on edge remains kinda garter stitch looking but it is closed and I know it will be inside my shoe so I carried on up the foot using instructions from the trusty FiberTrends Magic Loop booklet.

And the yarn!!! I just got in this fabulous soft cushy cotton/lycra sock yarn and I am IN. LOVE. It is soooo soft and knits really quick on larger needles. I'm knitting on US5's because I knit tightly, but most people would probably use 3's or 4's. I dyed this yarn using Procion MX dyes and was surprised at how light it came out. But I'm enjoying how it's knitting up...really soft and pretty.

I finally finished my Jack Sparrow socks and the recipient was very happy with them. It was my first attempt at stranded colourwork and I really enjoyed it.

If anyone plans on knitting this but is reasonable new to toe-up socks I recommend keeping at copy of Wendy's Generic Toe-Up socks pattern handy as the Jack Sparrow pattern doesn;t walk you though the short-row heels/toes.

Pattern: Jack Sparrow Socks/Wendy's Generic Toe-Up

Yarn: Lornas Laces Shepherd Sock - Camoflauge and Natural

Opal Uni - Brown

Needles: Clover Takumi Bamboo 2.5mm

Modifications: I increased the amount of stockinette between the heel and the skull pattern to achieve the length desired by the recipient.

I started my first toe up socks using Wendy's pattern and have loved it from the start. I wonder why it's taken me so long to use this technique for sock knitting? I'm sure I'm not the only one. I know this is not the first photo but I wanted to show you that I needed to frog my first attempt because I found the stitches that I picked up at my provisional cast on where quite loose. It's hard to see here but if you look closely at the distinct line created by the change of colour, you might be able to see it. Fortunately, at this stage, you don't have a lot to frog so it really didn't hurt me too much. ;o) I used some fine crochet thread to start my provisional 'crocheted' cast on the second time around and although it was a bit fiddly picking those itty bitty stitches up, it looks a LOT better. You really can't see a difference in the stitches at all now.

So now I'm away and loving every minute of this technique. I can see now that toe ups will become my favourite method of sock knitting. I love that I'll be able to use up *all* the yarn and not be left wondering if in fact, I'll even have enough yarn to finish a sock as we do when knitting from the top down. This has inspired me to try a top down jumper (sweater) as well. I'm sure I'll learn lots of nifty little secrets when I start that project as well.

I actually started these a week ago and am about to cast off that first sock. I plan on using EZ's sewn bind-off. The most unusual fact for me, is that I can't wait to knit the second sock. There's a gazillion other patterns out there that I'd like to try and I have a ton of sock yarn (and still buying....shhhh) but yes, I'm loving these toe-ups SO much that I'm busting to start sock two! Yay!

Oh....... the yarn is Trekking colour #100 and I'm using 2.25mm Ivore dpn's which I LOVE for sock knitting. Just wish they came in shorter a length.

After my minor toe woes (a too-narrow toe start), my piggies are enjoying some breathing room. So far the sock fits perfectly.

My "helper" is trying to remove one of my circs.

I find it interesting how different the yarn looks from the ball to the sock. The colors of this yarn are such that I often think, "I am knitting dirty socks." The beiges are grayed in places. However, when I take it out from under my nose, put some distance on it and try it on, I think it looks great!

Hi! My name is Kellie and I have been a member of this blog for a while, but have been very afraid to start my first toe ups. Well, all it took was an episode of Knitty Gritty where my sock knitting idol Cookie A. shared one of her patterns. That was it. I had to make them. So, here is what I have so far, after only ONE frogging!

I'm very proud of myself, and I am moving on to the lace. I can see that I will LOVE knitting toe ups, and this might be my method of choice from here on out. After all, I have a zillion toe up patterns that I want to learn! If I can just figure out how to do the two circs method.....

Yay!! I finally finished my first pair of toe up socks!!! I did undo my first sock as I've mentioned previously, the cuffs were too tight. This time around, I cast off using Elizabeth Zimmermann's sewn bind off which is much better and stretchier.

Pattern: Knitty Magic Cast-on for the toes, Misocrafty Short Row Heel, Basketweave Ribbing for the leg

First I practiced the figure-8 toe as described in the Jelly Bean sock pattern with worsted yarn and big needles. I chose the jelly bean because the designer theoretically designed them for a large, wide foot like mine; I also thought that her pattern explanations looked pretty good for a first timer.

Anyway, I cast on for the actual sock and I had no trouble at all, except ... See the shape of that toe and the shape of my foot? I...don't...think...so! I know socks stretch, but I'm sure a bit wider toe would be more comfortable. I began again, starting with 20 initial loops in the figure-8 rather than 12.

Oh, and for the person who was wondering about the 2 circs method, I really like it! I am using two 16" size 0s--they are a great length and I can easily tell which ends go together. Things go much more quickly for me than with dpns, and I find it much easier to avoid ladders between two needles than four. If dpns bug you at all, 2 circs are well worth a try.

I finished my first toe up socks last month, but haven't had time to post. I am totally hooked now! These first ones used a pattern from the Six Sox knit along group. Luckily the first project as I joined was toe up! I love the way they start with an icord--very easy to unzip and stitch up at the end. This photo shows the toe detail. On the last row of icord you use your main yarn and from there increase every other row until you have 72 stitches (in this case). It give a nice spiral look to the sock. These socks are finished. However, I forgot to take a photo before gifting these Spring time tennis socks to a friend. I am now working on a toe up the uses Wendy's wrap and turn pattern. I had a hard time unzipping the crochet without scissors on an airplane, but other than that I really enjoy the whole toe up knit experience!

Howdy Gang! Glad to be here and looking forward to conquering my first pair of socks. I had no real desire to make ANY socks at all until I saw a particular pair made by the Yarn Harlot. I never did find out what yarn she used, but it didn't matter... I was a goner.

As near as I can come to the knitted sock experience was a recent set of cuff-down felted slippers. First heel turns, first dpns...and nasty ladders. They felted great, though.

I wasn't in love with the dpns, and the magic loop technique makes me cringe (pulling the stitches apart to keep that loop), so I'm going to try the two-circs method. I find the size 0 needles a little unnerving. Here is the yarn I'm using... I made a little swatch to get a ballpark on stitches per inch.

Before I start my actual socks, I am going to practice a toe or two using worsted and larger needles. I'll check back in after a successful startup with the 0's. Thanks for allowing me to join in the fun!--Linda W

An Accomplishment!!!

Hi everyone!! I cast-on for my first pair of socks about two weeks ago and I’m doing it toe up. Mind you, I've never ever knitted socks before and therefore, this is really my first pair!! I was so excited!!

I used the Knitty Magic cast-on method and it really isn’t that hard. I used Wendy's short row method for the heel and the basket weave ribbing pattern for the leg.

However, althoug I cast-off using a much bigger needle in size 3.25 mm, the cuffs are still tight. I have to really pulled the cuffs in order to wear my first knitted sock :(

Which method is the best for casting off the cuff? Any suggestions??

I finally finished my first pair of toe-ups and gifted them to a friend of mine. She was kind enough to take pictures for me to share on my blog. (If you want to follow the socks progress, click on the -toe-up socks- category in the side bar)

They were made with a figure-8 toe and sherman heel. While this heel, imo, is easier than the wrap & turn short row, I'm still having trouble with it - mostly the knit encroachment doesn't look as good as the purl encroachment. :( I know it has something to do with how I'm picking up the stitch below, but I haven't quite figured it out yet.

Hope it's ok to still stick around, even though my first toe-ups are done ... I don't quite feel like I've mastered the technique.

Hello everyone, I'm Laura but my friends call me Loz so you guys can to! This is my first post even though I've been a member for ages. It's so lovely to be part of the knitting fro now that I've started my first sock well not quite, it's a toe and a foot! Below are all the details about it.

Pattern: Universal toe-up sock formula (can be found on Knitty)
Yarn: Freedom Spirit 100% wool by Twilleys of Stamford, shade 507

I never got around to singing in when I was working on these, but I'm procrastinating today, so here they are. I used the Knit Picks Two at once, toe-up pattern and discontinued Knit Picks Parade yarn from my stash. With the exception of the heel, I loved this pattern. I would definitely make it again, maybe trying one of those afterthought heels that's formed like a toe (side decreases & closed with kitchener) instead. Oh, also, I accidentally started from opposite ends of by yarn balls, so the stripes are headed in different directions. Whoops! I didn't realize until several stripes in, and it didn't vex me enough to frog it.

As a first time member of BlueMoonFiberArts' STR Club I got my first shipement and the pattern is a toe-up sock so I made my yarn cakes on my new Ball Winder and I'm so pleased with it. I'm really loving the texture of the yarn it's so soft and squishy so I can just image how it will feel on my feet. I have two other projects about to come off the needles before I began my socks so hopefully by next week I'll be casting on.

I made big progress last weekend,I love the handspun BFL,lovely to knit with but my spinning needed to be a bit finer so it means a looser comfy fit sock for me or a great sock for Hubby!

You can see the colour definition coming through,I was hoping that the tone changes were a little quicker but its interesting all the same.This is about 1 to 2 hours work,love long weekends I got ahead of everything else and was able to sit and knit with out interuption!

I have another lot of this wool in a different colourway,reds,yellows and pinks, and can't wait to start them.Im using Wendys generac pattern but will use a heel flap instead so theres plenty of room for Hubbys ankles!

I think my first problem was that I was looking at the entire pattern and feeling dizzy. Haha. So! Just one section at a time - - that is the new motto of my sock world. The toe went okay once I realized what I was doing, I did the easy toe of the small rectangle into knitting around it. So far the pattern is doing okay. I am doing Laburnum and the hardest part for me is k3tog on these "0" size needles. I fell like I might break the needle!

I can't tell you how exciting this is to learn new things. I have knit one pattern, I only know knit and purl. So far with this toe up I have learned M1, YO, kf&b! I want to thank knittinghelp.com for the little videos I can play over and over until I understand! LOL.

So the pictures.. I am just not a good photographer and I am not able to get a setting that is making me happy with my photo outcome. I had great outdoor pictures last year at Pennsic but indoor seems to be an entirely different monster.

Jack Sparrow Sock

My second attempt at knitting a toe-up sock is the Jack Sparrow sock. I found keeping a copy of Wendy's Generic Toe-Up pattern nearby handy as the pattern doesn't explain the short-row toe/heel techniques, just to cast on x stitches and do a short-row heel. I am using Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock in Camouflage and Natural and Opal Uni in Brown. I am knitting this sock as a bday present for a male friend -and was really pleased with myself when I had appeared to finish the first sock. It was only my second attempt at stranded colourwork and I was really pleased with it. However, I somehow managed to make it about 3/4inch too short in the foot, i think my short-row heel takes up less space than I imagined, and although I followed the pattern and knit 5 rounds of stocking stitch after the heel it was clear that he would require a good 2inches or so - men just don't look good in ankle socks! So anyone who decides to knit these, beware, even if its for a girl, you will need more than 5 rounds of knitting after the heel.
I have frogged and have made up the extra for the length and ready to start the heel (again). Photos soon.

This went a bit easier than I thought and actually sat at my parents house knitting like I knew what I was doing. They were impressed! lol. I did the easy toe which at first I felt there was nothing easy about it but once my rectangle was done and I was moving to knitting in the round I did that, "OH!!! I getttt itttt!" I am going to try the Laburnum pattern in Sensational Knitted Socks from my post below. I have never done anything but knit and purl so will be learning YO and some other things. I finished my pair of beginner socks and now embark on my toe up. I looked at a lot of patterns and had ordered Sensational Knitted Socks by Charlene Schurch so I think I will start there with a pattern that I might be able to figure out and along side it a tutorial that Wendy did that I found on Knitty.com.

What called for 8.5 stitches per inch on 2's became 0's. But I have my gauge! I am using Mega Boots from Meilenweit. I bought it at my local yarn shop because I was suddenly gripped in fear using my STR for my second try at socks, haha. It looks very pretty in the swatch.

So here I go!

Well I haven't had much to post about here...until now. I finally found a toe up pattern I like. I joined the Six Socks knitalong and the first pattern I joined in on was for toe ups. The designer used an icord to start that you join your knitting yarn to and start increasing from there. Here is a photo of the finished first sock and beginning of the second. I used a short row heel I learned from Wendy Knits on this too. I think I have found the perfect sock formula for me.

Hello Knitters!

I know one sock pattern and it is a very very basic sock. I know how to knit and purl. While I do want to learn how to do more, I am still a basic knitter.

What do you suggest for my first toe up sock? At the moment I have a colorway of Shaefer Ann. I have ordered some mystical creations and str and should have them any day. This gives me time to find a suitable pattern for one of these yarns.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I completed my first toe-up sock - just one, mind you. Definitely have second sock syndrome with this yarn/pattern. It's Regia Jacquard, which does indeed make an attractive sock for my 7 year old son, but it's not my favorite yarn as far as feel etc. I did the Easy Toe from Sensational Knitted Socks. I've read about a lot of other toe up castons etc, and do have the Queen Kahuna book, just have to sit down and try it... though I may just keep doing cuff down until I go to my sock camp (STR/BMFA Camp Cockamamie) in April and let Cat Bordhi and Stephanie Pearl McPhee demonstrate some other toe up castons and techniques!

Garter Stitch Toe

I knit all my socks toe-up using Wendy's pattern but I wanted to try changing the stocking stitch on the toe to garter stitch. I saw a garter stitch toe & heel sock pattern, Sixth Sense Socks on the Six Sox KAL & it was lovely but the pattern is written for a cuff down sock.

Well, I tried to be different & knit the sock toe-up - it was a tiring 3 nights as I experimented with the decrease row on the wrong side (which is supposed to be a purl row) but now it is a knit row - so how do you knit the wraps together ??? - after several attempts - I managed to figure it out - do a knit together tbl (on the RS) & a SSK (on the WS) - it looks alright but it's not perfect. Take a look at my 1st garter stitch toe ......

It's quite pretty & different from the usual stocking stitch toe & I am happy with it for the time being - maybe one of you sock knitters can share your experience if you have knitted a garter stitch toe using the wrap & turn method.

Working away on the second sock. It's going much better this time. So far. Knowing how many stitches to cast on makes a difference. LOL

I somehow managed to get the same amount of the lighter pink color at the end of the toe as on the first sock. Miracle of miracles. If I'd tried to do it, it wouldn't have worked at all.

The color order is opposite that of the first sock, however. I knit the first sock from the center of the ball of yarn, and this one from the outside... From the toe up, this sock will be pink, blue, fuchsia, instead of pink, fuchsia, blue. LOL Well, they still match. In all ways that are important. ;-)

Here is a picture of my toe ups, well one anyway. I could not get a decent shot of both (I know this isn't the best either), so to at least post the pic, I hoisted my foot up on the counter. Trust me, there is a 2nd one!:

I used Online sock yarn and because I bought one huge ball, I couldn't make them match. Oh well. It will drive me slightly insane, but I will wear them never the less. This is the first time knitting with this yarn, and it is okay to knit with, and feels so so on my feet. I kind of feel every stitch that I knit - weird. I was going to make a pair for my daughter Julianna with the left overs, but I don't think I will now. She won't like the feeling either.

I am glad I gave knitting toe ups another try as my first one was not very successful. The holes along the short rows were large and the cast off at the rib was extremely loose. This time around, things worked out great. I still have only two holes where I picked up the stitches after knitting the heels, but I can live with this.

I also learned the EZ sewn off method - dead easy and I can get my socks on and they are not too loose at the top. Yeah!

I am once again working on the socks I ripped out last year, two socks at once. I finally got the hang of the figure-8 toe. I got each one on the first try!

I'm about an inch away from the heel. Short Row Heel...here I come. Wish me luck! :)

Not my first...

I started my second pair of Toe Up socks yesterday using the Anastasia pattern by Pepperknit. This pattern has been in my "To Do" que since I finished my first pair of socks last year.
Sorry for the not so great photo. I'm still trying to learn how to use my new camera.

I've already discovered a major error I made on the top of the left foot. So I'll be frogging and re-doing it later tonight (maybe). Sometimes errors can be cute too!

Thanks for letting me join your KAL. A few days ago I finished my first toe up socks. I loved every moment of making them. My only problem is the "Falling Leaves" pattern from Knitty.com doesn't show up. I used "Buckeye" by Claudia Hand Paint Yarns. The colors are great put the pooling is not at all flatterning for the pattern. I'll know better next time. What do you all think?

January 13th. About 3 in done.

I actually finished this one a couple of weeks ago, but it took me awhile to find myself home when it wasn't dark. Unlike my first two pairs of socks, this one fits tight (in a good way). I started the second sock and was rolling along until I realized (on the bus) that I had missed the start of the gusset - apparently I was going straight for the turn of the heel. I need to rip back about two inches and I need to do that when I'm not bouncing down potholed roads. I hope to post a finished pair before long....

Thank you for all you nice comments on my striped sock woes. Don't you just love self-striping yarn? It's magical. My husband doesn't really know what to think about it. LOL

My first attempt at toe-up socks was a total failure. It must have been the pattern. The sock was so narrow I couldn't get my foot in it. Do feet really come that narrow? LOL Anyway, a year has gone by and I'm finally trying it again. With a different pattern.

I'm actually a little farther than this. I'll add photos to my blog as soon as it's light enough to take them. Shouldn't be too long. The sky is starting to lighten... enough that I just saw a bird scream past my window. LOL

One down....one to......ugghhh. I think I've caught SSS! Or it might be that I am easily distracted by these guys. I love the yarn so it's not that....I think my next pair needs to be a bit more exciting. Maybe cables or a lacey pattern. Any suggestions???
