As I am soon to receive a hank of hand dyed yarn for socks, I was wondering how I can choose a toe up pattern to try for the first time. I have made socks before, but never in the toe up method. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd say have a look at some of the patterns listed in the sidebar and see if any of them appeal to you. Find the one that seems easiest/clearest to you and try it out.
Don't forget, if you get stuck there are tutorials and how-to's listed under "helps" in the sidebar, and of course you can always ask for assistance (here on the blog) as somebody will have knitted the pattern you're knitting.
