My Toes Up Socks

Here's the pics finally of my first toe-up socks the sage green are the first pair and the start of my second socks is self-striping.

No SSS here

Working away on the second sock. It's going much better this time. So far. Knowing how many stitches to cast on makes a difference. LOL



I somehow managed to get the same amount of the lighter pink color at the end of the toe as on the first sock. Miracle of miracles. If I'd tried to do it, it wouldn't have worked at all.

The color order is opposite that of the first sock, however. I knit the first sock from the center of the ball of yarn, and this one from the outside... From the toe up, this sock will be pink, blue, fuchsia, instead of pink, fuchsia, blue. LOL Well, they still match. In all ways that are important. ;-)

Here is a picture of my toe ups, well one anyway. I could not get a decent shot of both (I know this isn't the best either), so to at least post the pic, I hoisted my foot up on the counter. Trust me, there is a 2nd one!:

I used Online sock yarn and because I bought one huge ball, I couldn't make them match. Oh well. It will drive me slightly insane, but I will wear them never the less. This is the first time knitting with this yarn, and it is okay to knit with, and feels so so on my feet. I kind of feel every stitch that I knit - weird. I was going to make a pair for my daughter Julianna with the left overs, but I don't think I will now. She won't like the feeling either.

I am glad I gave knitting toe ups another try as my first one was not very successful. The holes along the short rows were large and the cast off at the rib was extremely loose. This time around, things worked out great. I still have only two holes where I picked up the stitches after knitting the heels, but I can live with this.

I also learned the EZ sewn off method - dead easy and I can get my socks on and they are not too loose at the top. Yeah!

Trying again..

I am once again working on the socks I ripped out last year, two socks at once. I finally got the hang of the figure-8 toe. I got each one on the first try!

I'm about an inch away from the heel. Short Row Heel...here I come. Wish me luck! :)

Not my first...

I started my second pair of Toe Up socks yesterday using the Anastasia pattern by Pepperknit. This pattern has been in my "To Do" que since I finished my first pair of socks last year.
Sorry for the not so great photo. I'm still trying to learn how to use my new camera.

I've already discovered a major error I made on the top of the left foot. So I'll be frogging and re-doing it later tonight (maybe). Sometimes errors can be cute too!

Toe Up Newbie

Thanks for letting me join your KAL. A few days ago I finished my first toe up socks. I loved every moment of making them. My only problem is the "Falling Leaves" pattern from Knitty.com doesn't show up. I used "Buckeye" by Claudia Hand Paint Yarns. The colors are great put the pooling is not at all flatterning for the pattern. I'll know better next time. What do you all think?

One down, 3/4 of one to go

I actually finished this one a couple of weeks ago, but it took me awhile to find myself home when it wasn't dark. Unlike my first two pairs of socks, this one fits tight (in a good way). I started the second sock and was rolling along until I realized (on the bus) that I had missed the start of the gusset - apparently I was going straight for the turn of the heel. I need to rip back about two inches and I need to do that when I'm not bouncing down potholed roads. I hope to post a finished pair before long....

Thank you for all you nice comments on my striped sock woes. Don't you just love self-striping yarn? It's magical. My husband doesn't really know what to think about it. LOL

Trying it again

My first attempt at toe-up socks was a total failure. It must have been the pattern. The sock was so narrow I couldn't get my foot in it. Do feet really come that narrow? LOL Anyway, a year has gone by and I'm finally trying it again. With a different pattern.

I'm actually a little farther than this. I'll add photos to my blog as soon as it's light enough to take them. Shouldn't be too long. The sky is starting to lighten... enough that I just saw a bird scream past my window. LOL

Do I feel warm to you????

One down....one to......ugghhh. I think I've caught SSS! Or it might be that I am easily distracted by these guys. I love the yarn so it's not that....I think my next pair needs to be a bit more exciting. Maybe cables or a lacey pattern. Any suggestions???

Here's to hoping I recover soon.....because my other foot is REALLY cold!

I am still procrastinating about this whole toe up sock. Then my Harvest Sock Swap pal sent me...a toe up sock. She designed the pattern herself and sent it to me but her writing and pattern symbols were a little vague. So once she posts the pattern up on her blog I will start it. Wish me luck! C-ya, Miss Amy

short row heel conquered!

I have to tell you all, I was literally scared of the whole short row heel idea. As I inched closer to the heel part of my sock, I started to not want to knit on my sock anymore! I finally got to the heel part this past week, looked at the directions and was a bit puzzled when it said I was going to have to wrap and turn. What???? I tried it once, but wasn't sure if I was doing it right and didn't have the time to check. I checked out the links provided here and really liked the idea of doing japanese short rows but didn't do a good job researching them. I will soon though! I posted on my blog about short rows, and someone suggested I check out the knitting help tutorial on short rows. That helped immensely and here is my sock so far. :) I love this pattern and I love my sock! I love how everyday it starts looking a lil more different. :)

The second one went from stripes to swirls by the end, but I still think they rock! It was ironic that the day after I finished them, Wendy added details to her toe up sock directions that I was using. I'm still not sure I did the "wrap and turn" and "pick up the wraps and knit them" thing right.

Hi! This is my first post, and I wanted to share a photo of my progress so far on my first pair of toe up socks. I have made a few pair (7 or so) cuff down, but wanted to try my hand at something new.

I am using Socks that Rock on size 1 needles, the Lucy colorway. I am using WendyKnits method since the socks are named for her cat. I like how they fit, and they seem like a much smoother knit than cuff down. I also hate picking up stitches, so this avoids that quite nicely.

100% cotton ribbed with short-row heel/toe

Hi everyone! I'm very excited to be making a pair of socks that fit several "first" criteria:

1. my first toe-ups (duh!)
2. my first tiny gauge needles (size 1)
3. my first socks on two circular needles
4. my first 100% cotton socks

I'm using cotton sock yarn made by Hibiscuits Girl of The Black Stitch in the "Stronghold" colorway, on Addi Turbo 1s. I used the toe-up pattern from Simple Socks: plain and fancy, used a regular short-row toe, did a reverse stockinette on the bottom of the foot since I've got sensitive tootsies, and I'm about to start what is called a "Sherman" heel - apparently the wraps are much flatter and the whole heel looks much neater in this style. Once I get through that, I will be doing a simple k2 p2 ribbing. Once I see how this yarn is worn, I will attempt some fancy socks using lace patterns.

Short Row Heel........ Conquered!!!!

Well, I had a war with 2 cirs, Cascade "Cloud 9" yarn and short row heel shaping. Ladies, let me tell you, it was no easy feat. The war lasted for 3 consecutive days, this knitter was stuck in the trenches of slipstitches and stitchmarkers, frog ponds x8, internet surfing x 6 hrs, all the short row picture tutorials I could stand, a hissy-fit of frustration x1, the tying on of the white handkerchief in near submission, a few swigs of coffee to steady the nerves, and one night of real rest. On the 4th day in the 2nd hour the battle was over Knitgirlll was the victor the outcome a short row heel. It wasn't as pretty as all the others I looked at but for all the hard work I had put into getting the concept I was one happy gal. I will post pics in a few days as my digital camera has died.

Feat - Get It!!

I chose the Waders Socks by Jennifer Young at Magknits to do my first toe-up socks. They are bee-u-ti-full. And I think the reason I get second sock syndrome is because I get bored of knitting around, around, around.... So I put the sock down or I measure every two rounds to see if I have moved from the last measurement. I had to frog back to 54 stitches because I increased up to 68 - thinking I was just going to do boring stockinette stitch. That was a feat in itself. (LOL - Feet Get it - I giggle:o)). I had a wonderful day today and just wanted to share...

long overdue!

Hello all! I joined a while back (try November!) but hadn't posted anything because I wanted it to seem like I had accomplished something! I'm working on the widdershins with the cables. Here's what my toe looked like in November. Here's what my sock looks like now after some vacation knitting! The knitting is coming along slowly but I'm in no rush. I like that I can try it on and I don't have to guess if it's going to be long enough or not!
Before joining the kal, I'd come and read the posts and comment on everyone's progress and then I finally decided to join and I am glad that I took a chance @ toe-up sock knitting. :) It just might become my favorite way of knitting socks!
